✦ Synopsis
The first issue of the Human Resource Devefopment Quarterly this year unmasked a controversy over the four-level evaluation model proposed by Kirkpatrick (1976Kirkpatrick ( , 1994)). Whether you agree with Holton (1996) or with Kirkpatrick (1996), an important focus of measurement efforts is upon "organizational results" (Holton's words) or "results" (Kirkpatricks term). So as not to fan the flames any further, I would like to change the venue. Instead of discussing the evaluation of training, I would like to turn attention to evaluation of the impact of another intervention: teams in organizations. I will begm with a brief review of the early research on teams. Next I will present selected case studies on teams and their results. Then I will review a few published research studies on teams and their results. Finally, I will suggest some next steps for researchers to take in measuring the impact of teams.
