odern university health sciences centers M normally establish their reputations on their clinical and scientific achievements. Seldom are they known for their achievements in art or literature. Yet, teaching in the humanities is a persistent and significant part of the curriculum at many health sciences teaching centers. This is the case at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), the site of four health sciences schools-Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing, and Pharmacy. Patterns of classroom teaching, clinical teaching, and research in the humanities are uniquely adapted to the structure of UCSF. At the same time, the humanities at UCSF exemplify major themes common to the humanities in professional training programs generally. These themes include:
