β¦ Synopsis
The authors drew on their analyses of five major studies, supported by other studies of helicopter pilots, fork-lift truck drivers, tractor drivers and others, to investigate the effects of whole-body vibration on back disorders. They compared, and linked, their work with other studies in the literature, to consider the relative contributions of vibration, exposure time and posture on the disorders.
Amongst their documented conclusions is the statement that they believe that the present standard for exposure, ISO 2631, previously based on data on comfort and perceptional factors, would be better if based on long-term effects on health. They state that health effects occur at, or even below, those levels given in this standard, that a lower limit is desirable and a recent proposal to increase the limit should be opposed.
