โœฆ Synopsis

Abstract

To investigate the possible relationship of HTLVโ€I virus infection to autoimmune thyroid disease, we examined, firstly, the frequency of HTLVโ€I seropositivity among patients with Hashimoto's thyroiditis and, secondly, the frequency of Hashimoto's thyroiditis in patients with HTLVโ€I associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP). Of 144 patients with Hashimoto's thyroiditis in the Tokushima and Kochi Prefectures, Japan, 9 (6.3%) were positive for serum HTLVโ€I virus antibody 2 of whom were confirmed histologically to have Hashimoto's thyroiditis. This percentage is significantly higher (P < 0.01) than the estimated prevalence (2.2%) of HTLVโ€I carriers among the general population in this region. Of 9 patients with HAM/TSP, 3 (33.3%), including 2 biopsyโ€proven cases, had evidence of Hashimoto's thyroiditis. This proportion is apparently much higher than the prevalence (1.7%) of Hashimoto's thyroiditis in the general population. These findings suggest that HTLVโ€I virus may be related to the development of Hashimoto's thyroiditis. ยฉ 1992 Wileyโ€Liss, Inc.

## Abstract ## Background. Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) and higher levels of thyroidโ€stimulating hormone (TSH) have been proposed as risk factors for papillary thyroid cancer (PTC), but this issue is still being debated. ## Abstract ## Background/Aims. It has been speculated that impaired salivary flow contributes to autoimmune thyroiditis (chronic thyroiditis, Hashimoto's thyroiditis). To test this hypothesis, salivary function was measured by quantitative salivary scintigraphy in autoimmune thyroiditis patients,

The etiology of the autoimmune thyroid, Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) is not very clear. However, genetic susceptibility is thought to play a critical role. The vitamin D receptor (VDR)-related endocrine system has been demonstrated to be able to carry out modulation of the immune response. Here, we
