## Abstract Deuterostomes are a monophyletic group of animals containing vertebrates, lancelets, tunicates, hemichordates, echinoderms, and xenoturbellids. Four out of these six extant groups—vertebrates, lancelets, tunicates, and hemichordates—have pharyngeal gill slits. All groups of deuterostome
