✦ Synopsis
1 thank Dr. Koumoulides for his kind review of my book. I hope I will not be judged overly pedantic to discuss further two points he raises. It is important to note, as the reviewer does, that sport contributed to the physical and spiritual well-being of the ancient Greeks: I would add that their competitiveness was a powerful force that would and sometimes did lead to serious bodily harm. One must be careful not to romanticize the world of ancient combat sport. Koumoulides is also correct to point out the etymology of athletai and agonistai, but by Classical times the usage of these terms becomes rather indistinct-see, for example, Plato, Laws 830 A or Aristotle, Constitution of the Athenians 60.3.
