Abstract
Global virtual teams have the deck stacked against them: long distances, cultural differences, lack of social cues to help gauge each other's trustworthiness—and leaders unprepared to deal with these challenges. What such teams need for success are special leadership, consistent work practices, and keen attention to communication and building trust through a focus on member commitment and competency. TRW Automotive trains its continuous improvement leaders on how to apply the Goals, Roles, Processes, and Interpersonal Relationships (GRPI) Model with their far‐flung virtual project members to create the all‐important interdependent relationships and team cohesion in the absence of face‐to‐face interactions. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
