โœฆ Synopsis

The calculation of solid-state N M R line shapes for static solids or for magic-angle-spinning samples showing second-order quadrupolar effects requires accounting for the orientational dependence of NMR frequencies. Simple QBASIC computer programs that can be implemented on a personal computer for such line shape simulations are described. They are easily translated to other computer languages or generalized to cases not discussed in the present work. Specific examples illustrate the programs' applicability.

A simple procedure is described which can be used to simulate solid state NMR sideband shapes for samples rotating at any angle and speed, when a combination of chemical shift anisotropy and dipolar coupling between spin-l/2 and quadrupolar nuclei occurs. The contributions of Sir Peter Mansfield to MRI are rooted in solid state NMR. I summarize some of the important contributions of Sir Peter to that field, provide a glimpse of the state of the art in multiple-pulse line-narrowing in the early 1970s, and indicate how the earliest MRI efforts at Notti
