If you are looking to save money on your groceries (and these days who isn't?) have you ever considered making your own basic ingredients from scratch rather than buying the pre-packaged versions in the supermarkets?

I used to take it for granted that if I needed Worcestershire Sauce for a recipe, or had run out of baking powder, a trip to the grocery store was my only option. However, after an extended vacation with my maternal Grandmother several years ago, I was introduced to the tips and techniques which had helped her and her family survive on war-time rations, whilst maintaining a healthy diet. She continued to make all of her own food from scratch even when convenience foods became widely available, simply because it was tastier and made economical sense. The fact that she lived a long and healthy life was - I believe - partly attributable to her long-term healthy eating habits.

The health benefits gained by using natural ingredients instead of manufactured products is one of my main motivators for making as much of my own basic foods as possible, on a par with the cost savings. Knowing exactly what is going in to the food I provide for my family - with none of the additives or chemical preservatives - is important to me; after all, the long-term effects of additives in our foods are not yet fully known.

There are of course also environmental benefits to buying less prepackaged foods. Buying less bottled, tinned and packaged foods will reduce your environmental footprint as well as leave more money in your pocket.

Using the recipes in this book will help you save money on groceries and be less reliant on pre-packaged foods. Next time you are at the grocery store ask yourself 'can I make this instead of buying it?' and you will be well on your way to enormous savings on your grocery bill.
