Originally, the public domain typesetting systems TEX and L8TEX have been designed for American standards only. Nowadays, however, they are being used all over the world and with a lot of different languages. This article is intended to show an example of the problems that arise when modifying TEX or LATEX for easier application with a language other than US-Engjish. Hints are added, how similar work might be perfonned for all European languages, with special emphasis on compatibility and portability problems and on international co-operation.
