✦ Synopsis

Many of the movements of spirochetes can be understood if the protoplasmic cylinder is semi-rigid, the external sheath is flexible, and the axial filaments rotate. A spirochete could be a Gram-negative bacterium with a detached outer membrane that swims by rotating its flagella in the periplasmic space.
