Chad Mirkin and colleagues from Northwestern University have discovered a way of synthesizing triangular nanoprisms -dubbed 'nano-Doritos' -in large volumes. Reporting in Science [(2001) 294, 1901-1903], the researchers found that commercially available silver nanoparticles could be converted into a colloidal suspension containing nanoprisms simply by leaving them in a soap solution exposed to light for a few days.
