Une des réussites les plus jubilatoires de Charles Williams, grand spécialiste des atmosphères sudistes, des machinations qui tournent mal et des femmes fatales. Charles Williams naît en 1909 au Texas. Engagé dans la marine marchande puis servant dans l’armée jusqu’à la fin de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, il s’installe à Los Angeles après la guerre et travaille pour Mackay Radio. Il publie son premier roman en 1951 et rencontre immédiatemment le succès. Il publiera vingt-deux romans, sera adapté à treize reprises sur grand écran, collaborera à l’écriture de plusieurs scénario. Bien-aimé du public français, il recevra le Grand Prix de Littérature policière en 1956. Il se suicidera en 1975 dans son appartement de Los Angeles.
