✦ Synopsis

New study evaluates fuel cell, plug-in EVs

A new report by management consultancy McKinsey concludes that fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) are an affordable and effective low-carbon solution for a large proportion of the European car fleet, and an essential component of the advanced energy portfolio. The study was sponsored by a public-private coalition of 31 companies and organizations, with the technical assessment based on proprietary information from 11 major automakers.

The study evaluated FCEVs, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), and battery electric vehicles (BEVs). It concluded that all three technologies, and improved internal combustion engines, will be necessary to achieve the CO 2 reduction targets set by industrialized nations.

The report calls for urgent investment in FCEVs, because of the long investment cycles in energy infrastructure. The report calls FCEVs 'technologically ready' and affordable -it says that the total cost of ownership of all four powertrains is expected to converge after 2025, and possibly earlier depending on government incentives.

The report also took into account infrastructure costs, and says they are not a barrier for FCEVs. While the study looked at Europe, the results are relevant to the US, with its generally larger vehicles and longer journeys.
