Recently, it has been noted' that some autocatalysed brominations involving the formation of HDr may involve free-radical processes. The fact that adducts are formed acconpanying the rather colnplex course of bromination of cholest-5-e+3-one has led us to investigate the course of elimination from 5ar6&dibromocholestar+3-one (partial formula ?a) and ?,6a-dibromocholestan-3-one (partial formula lb).

## Abstract The reactions of 1,2‐hexadecanediol and 1,2‐octadecanediol with hydrogen bromide in the presence of acetic anhydride have been investigated. The treatment of hydrogen bromide (48%) in acetic anhydride with 1,2‐hexadecanediol gives mainly 1‐bromo‐2‐acetoxy hexadecane (66%), 2‐acetoxy hex
