✦ Synopsis

TiAI compounds wcrc produced by plasma arc melting (PAM) and hot isoscatic pressing (HIP), fine spherical powders (FSP+ HIP) to evaluate the homogeneity and mechanical properties. The influence of the oxygen content and production processes on the microstructure and mechanical properties was also investigated. The summary is as follows. The PAM materials showed relatively good homogeneity of aluminum and oxygen by improving the method of charging the raw materials. The ingots were up to (,OO mm in length. The FSP+ HIP materials showed better homogeneity and finer microstructure than the PAM materials. The strength increased slightly and the ductility decreased, with increasing oxygn content. The tensile ductility at room temperature increased up to I .2'%. for the FSP+ HIP materials with an oxygen content of 0.03%. Therefore, it is important to keep the homogeneity, microstructure and the oxygen content as low as possible in order to improve the ductility of TiAl materials. A positive tcmperaturc dependence was shown from the results of the compression tests.
