Prin Hollywood , Bukowski își povestește experiențele de scenarist din vremea cînd, în anul 1987, lucra la turnarea unui film. Henry Chinaski, celebrul alter ego al lui Bukowski, revine de data aceasta cu un scenariu hollywoodian: The Dance of Jim Beam. Filmul este inspirat din experiențele de scandalagiu petrecăreț ale tînărului Chinaski, pe cînd acesta nu era încă un scriitor cunoscut. Pe masură ce protagonistul, alături de iubita lui, Sarah, este prins de vîrtejul experiențelor hollywoodiene, Bukowski agață cu ironie în firul parodic al evenimentelor și nume cunoscute din lumea culturală, transformîndu‑le doar pe alocuri rezonanța: Jon‑Luc Modard, filozoful Jean‑Paul Sanrah, Frances Ford Lopalla și un anume Victor Norman ce amintește de Norman Mailer.
