Abstract

Biopsy samples from 96 cases of Hodgkin's disease have been subdivided into four groups based on the histological classification suggested at the Rye Conference on The Obstacles to the Control of Hodgkin's Disease held in Rye, New York, in 1965. The four groups, namely, lymphocytic predominance, nodular sclerosis, mixed cellularity, and lymphocytic depletion are shown to be associated with 5‐year survival rates of 58%, 45%, 18% and 8% respectively, as calculated by the life table method. The anatomical extent of the disease has also been shown to influence prognosis, 5‐year survival rates being 42%, 30%, 6% and 0% respectively for the four clinical stages described.

A series of 142 patients with Hodgkin's disease of the nodular sclerosis and mixed histologic types who received chemotherapy is presented. Seventy-six of the patients had received radiotherapy before chemotherapy. The median survival after institution of chemotherapy was 20 months. Regardless of se
