Abstract

This panel is concerned with the historiography of information science, from related, but also contrasting, perspectives. Papers explore the interaction between specific historical events and broader historical developments and the understanding of those events and developments.

Themes of collective memory and forgetting relate the presentations to one another. They are concerned with the diffusion of ideas and events over time and across intellectual space. The diffusion of technologies is another theme, with information technology itself acting as a communicator across otherwise separate thought communities.

In relation to the specific conference themes, the presentations explore the ways in which information technologies are revolutionary in terms of human creativity and thought, and, by revisiting the unknown past, explore the possibilities of shaping of the future information world.
