✦ Synopsis
Kenneth O. May, when he launched Historia Mathematica, once said that if the journal survived into its 10th year, he would consider it well established. The fact that it has now reached its 25th year is an important landmark, and in recognition of this achievement, the following is dedicated to his memory, and to the energies of all who have contributed over the years to Historia Mathematica.
This year marks the completion of the first quarter-century of Historia Mathematica, which initially appeared exactly 25 years ago, in February of 1974, under the editorship of Kenneth O. May. The brief survey presented here is intended to illuminate the context of the journal within the history of periodicals for the history of mathematics (dating back to 1855 when Olry Terquem launched the Bulletin de bibliographie, d'histoire et de biographie mathématiques in Paris). The origins of Historia Mathematica and its connections to the international community of historians of mathematics on the one hand and to mathematicians on the other are also discussed.
