✦ Synopsis
A histological and morphometric study was undertaken in order to evaluate the alterations in sural nerves harvested for nerve grafting using a nerve stripper. In 18 nerves, biopsies were taken from the proximal and/ or the distal end of the stripped nerve graft. Cross sections were examined for alterations of the perineurium and the myelin sheaths. In four nerves, alterations inside to the perineurium were found, which involved 37.4% of the endoneurial space on the average. The results of the present study suggest that harvesting of a nerve graft by the stripper does not cause major injuries to the graft and, therefore, successful neurotization of the graft is not impaired.
