โฆ Synopsis
The purpose of this paper is to report observations on some histochemical reactions of cortical cells of fresh and fixed adrenal glands. Varying interpretations of the functional activity of adrenal glands have been based upon the cytological appearances and reactions of cortical cells to histochemical tests. One group of investigators has maintained that the ketosteroid content of the adrenals can be visualized (Deane and Greep, '46 ; Dempsey and m7islocki, '46 ; Dempsey, '48 ; Greep and Deane, '49). By employing a battery of procedures, chemical and physical, they have contended that adrenal ketosteroids can be characterized in a semi-quantitative manner. Other investigators have denied these claims and have asserted that at the present time cortical steroids cannot be found by morphological examination (Albert and Leblond, '46; Boscott and Mandl, '49; Claesson and Hillarp, '47). Few have determined the role of formaldehyde fixation in effecting positivc results (Yoffey and Baxter, '47) nor have the histochemical procedures with respect to fixation been evaluated.
