✦ Synopsis

1 H n.m.r. studies of substituted 1,3-diphenyl ally1 anions' showed that phenyl rotation is on the n.m.r. time scale but the spectra were so complex that it was difficult to obtain rates.

In the proton decoupled13C n.m.r. spectra no such problems exist. The sodium salt of trans,trans-1,3-diphenyl ally1 anion --(1) in liquid ammonia at -IO0 shows signals at 90.3 (-CH-CH-CH), 112.1 (para-C), 118.6 (ortho-C), 128.8 (U-C), 129-O (?-CH-CH-CH-), and 146.7 (phenyl-I-C) (6 from T.M.S.)2. As the temperature is lowered the signal due to the ortho carbons broadens and splits into two peaks at 115.4 and 121.3 6.

1,2\_Dineopentyltetramethylbenzene, I, is an extremely crowded mole-1 cule. We have found that the rate of rotation about the CA,-C& bonds is sufficiently slow to be measured by the methods of n.m.r. spectroscopy 233 . This is the first example of hindered rotatipn of alQ1 groups attached to a singl
