Hij had nog tijd om heen en weer te lopen in zijn eenvoudige, nauwkeurig opgemeten kamer. Hij had er een bank en een tafel in gezet en had een balsahouten model van the Dakota House op de vensterbank staan. Er lag geen kleed op de vloer en de smalle spiegel aan de keukendeur hing te laag voor hem. Hij had hem daar niet opgehangen. Als hij wilde zien hoe zijn mond eruitzag moest hij zich bukken; het enige wat hij zag was dood vlees.
