The Neuron: Cell andMoleculur Biology (1991). By IRWIN B. LEVITAN AND LEONARD K. KACZMAKEK. Oxford University Press. Pp. xii+450. ISBN 0-19-507071-2. flX.95. By Jeremy Grierson On the shelves of good university bookshops these days one can find quite a generous handful of introductory texts to neurobiology, ranging from thc lavishly illustraled and hcavyweight, to several more. modest offerings. Most start at the cellular or molecular level and proceed rapidly to discussions of complex behaviours. This broad selection is nice, but of course no onc topic can be addressed in any great detail. Perhaps then, there is a need for introductory texts which are in themselves more focused. One such text, a recent addition to the bookshelves, is The Neuron: Cell and Molecular Biology.

This book, as proclaimed by the authors, is 'unabashedly reductionistic'. Here, there is no discussion of motor systems
