The Fourth International Photovoltaic Science and Engineering Conference held in Sydney in February 1989 was the first major photovoltaics conference to be held in the Southern Hemisphere. Significant new results were reported across the photovoltaic spectrum. The highlights of these are reviewed from the perspective of the author as General Chairman of the Conference.
