✦ Synopsis

We present highlights of BeppoSAX results on three galaxies, archetypical in their respective classes: the two starburst galaxies NGC 253 and M82, and the LINER galaxy M81. The main observational results obtained are summarized, a most favored interpretation is proposed, and finally the main implications are briefly discussed.
