Binary current leads for liquid helium (LHe) cooled superconducting apparatus offer a reduced amount of refrigeration power. The required intermediate cooling stage near the normal conducting part (NCP)-high critical temperature superconductor (HTS) interface needs special attention when high voltages have to be maintained. Some principal ways are discussed. External cold nitrogen voltage breaks are found to be the most adequate solution. The benefits are discussed by means of an example, and an evalution against conventional gas-cooled leads is given.

The steady-state thermal performance of a cryostat current lead composed of a normal conductor upper part and a superconductor lower part is analysed. The upper end of the lead is at ambient temperature, the lower end is immersed in liquid helium, and the cooling for the lead is totally provided by
