✦ Synopsis

The utility of the high-temperature superconductor, YBazCusOp_, as the cathode material for an all-solid-state lithium cell has been examined. The capacity of YBa,Cu,O,_, is 223 mA h g-' and the discharge efficiency is >!?2%. Measurements of a.c. impedance show that the charge-transfer resistance at the interface of the electrolyte/cathode is very low and increases with the depth-of-discharge of the battery. Studies using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XT'S) reveal that the cathode becomes doped with Li+ ions as the cell discharges.

A practical method was devised for measurements of the diamagnetic response of high temperature superconductor specimens. The method is useful for the study of the temperature and field dependencies of the local magnetic induction and its twodimensional visualisation B(T,H,,x,y) with a resolution of
