✦ Synopsis
The nitridation process of MJ12 (Ti-47Al-2Nb-2Cr) and MJ47 (Ti-47Al-2Nb-2Mn Y 0.8TiB 2 ) in an atmosphere of purified ammonia has been investigated over the temperature range 1000-1200 K. The nitrided alloys showed improvement of hardness and wear resistance in this environment. At 1200 K nitridation, Knoop hardness values of MJ12 and MJ47 were 1283.6 and 1391.3 kg mm -2 , respectively, and the decrease in wear rate of both alloys was as much as 99%. By using x-ray diffraction, TiN was detected on the surface of the alloys nitrided ≥1100 K.
