Abstract
A brief description of the requirements for materials to be used in high temperature applications is given. The main types of high temperature materials, i.e. alloys, refractory metals, coatings and ceramics are presented both in terms of present status and future prospects. Suggestions for research efforts in the field of high temperature materials are outlined.
