✦ Synopsis

The mechanisms responsible for high strength in cement paste systems are assessed in an attempt to define features common to selected new technologies, e.g., hot-pressed, impregnated, and macrodefect-free pastes.

Important factors influencing strength of porous systems include porosity, pore geometry, C-S-H composition, composite behaviour and fracture criteria. The effects of low water-cemant ratio, dense inclusions, stress modification in critical areas and their role in optimizing and controlling production of high-strength cement paste are discussed.

Unusually high strengths have been generated in materials produced by employing "hot-pressing" techniques, and intermediate ranges of strengths have been achieved by applying high pressures at room temperature, to portland cement pastes. By pressing at ca. 250°C and 50, 000 psi strengths are as high

Recent developments in methods of processing ordinary Portland cement have shown that above average strengths (in flexure) are easily obtained without expending energy on high pressure compaction techniques. This paper reports strengths and other physical properties of both ordinary pastes and modi

The stress-strain behavior of cement pastes, hydrated for 28 days, over a range of strain rates (from almost static to 103 sec -I) has been investigated. At low strain rates (<250 sec -I) the ultimate stress increases with increase in strain rate, whereas at high rates (>250 sec -1) it reaches a lim

Portland and white cement pastes of widely-variable water/cement ratios were studied after six years' hydration by means of quantitative X-ray diffractometric analysis of the CH and C-S-H gel contents. The results obtained have led to certain conclusions on the crystallinity and possible crystal str
