✦ Synopsis
The constant velocity puncture impact characteristics of three polystyrene low pressure thermoplastic structural foam plaques manufactured at identical processing conditions were measured. The test results showed that the impact performance varied, significantly over the plaque but with less variation between plaques. However, the variation does illustrate the difficulty in predicting impact performance of TSF parts. The specimens failed in a brittle manner though some did exhibit ductile compression under the impactor before the plaque failed in a brittle manner. The energy to fracture was satisfactorily correlated with a power law relationship.
