โœฆ Synopsis

Motors are achieving substantial time saving (for instance 4rain to perform a task that takes 3-4 months using manual methods) on some engineering design tasks at their commercial vehicles centre with the recent installation of a CalComp 960 high-speed draughting system.

The 960 combines the advantages of drum plotters with those of flat-bed plotters, and has the ability to plot in two colours, onto preprinted stationery if required, at speeds of up to 42 in/s. Working offline via a CalComp 925, 9-track, 800 b.p.i. graphics controller, the plotter is used by Vauxhall's Engineering and Styling Department in design validation procedures, and is installed in the Engineering Computer Services Department.

Braking curves, body-panel stress analysis, gear-box design, steering geometry, performance predictions, crash

A direct-inking recording system which is capable of resolving impulses separated in time by 0.01 sec., and which can operate continuously for long periods of time, has been utilized in telemetering cosmic-ray signals from balloon-borne equipment. A tape-reader mechanism permits rapid analysis of th
