The genetic variants of the human protease inhibitor system were examined by isoelectric focusing with a modified immobilized pH gradient. Classifications of PI variants and PI M subtypes were made in the so-called PI m8 zone. The common and rare inherited PI M subtypes could be readily distinguished.
