✦ Synopsis

After a brief introduction to the electromagnetic ion trap, we concentrate on the problems related to precise determination of cyclotron fhquencies of stored ions. Since these frequency measurements are performed in order to obtain mass ratios we want to point out the inherent difficulties in detecting mass ratios different from 1.0. We then describe the time-of-flight method of detecting ion cyclotron resonance signals. With a small Mom temperature Penning trap of characteristic size d= 18 mm in a 7 T magnetic field we study the effect of changing electrical field anharmonicities (i.e. dodecapole term) and of various ion numbers on the cyclotron frequency.

'endcap' with a potential difference V between them. In the asymptotic region and behind the holes in the endcaps additional compensation electrodes are located. The magnetic field is parallel to the symmetry axis of the trap.

The theory of a method for the calculation of organic ion compositions is described. It is based on concepts of homologous groups and homologous increments of 'mass defect.' Unlike the common algorithms usually used for this purpose, the proposed method excludes the analysis and outcome of chemicall
