✦ Synopsis

The n 1 (symmetric stretch) and n 3 (asymmetric stretch) fundamental bands of the semistable molecule ClOCl have been recorded and analyzed. This is the first high-resolution infrared study of dichlorine monoxide. The spectrum, which occurs in the 600 to 700 cm 01 region, is very dense, and its assignment was greatly aided by the results of previous microwave studies of the ground and excited vibrational states. About 5400 transitions belonging to the two most abundant isotopic forms, 35 Cl 16 O 35 Cl and 35 Cl 16 O 37 Cl, were assigned and fitted. For each isotope, the n 1 and n 3 bands were analyzed simultaneously in order to account for the Coriolis interaction which couples these vibrations. The band origins for the 35 Cl 16 O 35 Cl isotope were determined to be n 1 Å 641.9694(1) cm 01 and n 3 Å 686.5936(1) cm 01 . The Coriolis interaction parameter was determined to be G c Å 0.21087(2) cm 01 , which corresponds to z C 13 Å 0.928.

High-resolution FTIR data of carbonyl fluoride in the region of the C-O stretch n 1 fundamental have been analyzed. Satisfactory interpretation of the spectral data required a rigorous analysis that involved the inclusion of Fermi resonance with the 2n 2 state and Coriolis interaction with the 2n 3
