✦ Synopsis
The real contact between solids under high contact pressure was investigated. The measurements were made using an ultrasonic technique. Hydrostatic pressure was used to produce the force pressing the samples against each other. It was assumed that the contact region might be considered to be thin three-dimensional layer of matrix material containing spherical voids. The attenuation of the ultrasonic waves being reflected from the contact of solids was measured and then the values of the reflection coefficient were calculated. On the basis of theory and experimental results two parameters describing the contact of solids were evaluated.
