✦ Synopsis

Measurements of the Cotton-Mouton effect as a function of density and temperature are reported for the first time. The system investigated, carbon dioxide, is shown to be free of orientational correlation and therefore suited for the study of local-field effects over a moderate range of indices of refraction. The results seem to favour the local field factor f(n) = (n2 + 2)/3 over the traditionally used squared expression f(n) = [(n' + 2)/3]* of the Born-Langevin orientation theory.
