โœฆ Synopsis

We have studied pressure-induced transitions and structural changes in isostructural strontium and barium orthovanadates, Sr 3 (VO 4 ) 2 and Ba 3 (VO 4 ) 2 , via Raman spectroscopy. The spectral changes in Ba 3 (VO 4 ) 2 can be interpreted as being due to condensation of VO 3ุŠ 4 units into edge-or corner-shared octahedra with little or no hysteresis on decompression. For Sr 3 (VO 4 ) 2 , there is a pressure-induced first-order phase change at about 150 kbar, with large hysteresis on decompression, which can be rationalized as a transition into a spinelloid series of structures, retaining the tetrahedral coordination of the V atoms.

The combined X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy data show that Ca 3 (VO 4 ) 2 irreversibly amorphizes at 10.0 GPa and room temperature. The amorphization, with its onset at about 8.5 GPa, is not preceded by any phase transition in the crystalline phase, which possesses highly anisotropic compr

Two new nickel metavanadate hydrates, Ni(VO 3 ) 2 ' 4H 2 O and -Ni(VO 3 ) 2 ' 2H 2 O, have been synthesized using a 99chimie douce:: process; their crystal structures have been solved from single-crystal X-ray di4raction data. The tetrahydrate Ni(VO 3 ) 2 ' 4H 2 O crystallizes in the monoclinic spac
