✦ Synopsis


Flexitallic seals are extensively used in a new US$350 million, magnesium production plant which opened recently at the Dead Sea. The plant has been built in conjunction with a new US$130 million local power stalion. It will have the capacity to produce 27 500 tons of magnesium each year, by cleaning, sifting. drying and melting the raw material Carnallite, a mixture of salts from the Dead Sea.

The fracture resistance of a Sic whisker/AlzO, matrix composite for the test temperature range of 20" to 1400Β°C was determined using chevron-notched and straightnotched, three-point bend specimens. Crack mouth opening displacement (CMOD) was continuously monitored throughout the fracture tests, usin
