Abstract

A new architecture of dual‐stage erbium‐doped fiber amplifier with double‐pass preamplification is successfully demonstrated. A maximum gain of 52 dB is obtained at −50‐dBm signal power with 1550‐nm signal wavelength. An efficient filtering of amplified spontaneous emission improves gain at the signal wavelength up to 18 dB in the double‐pass amplifier section. The noise‐figure penalty is very minimal in the small‐signal range, compared to the dual‐stage amplifier without bandpass filters. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We demonstrate a dual-stage gain-clamped erbium-doped fiber amplifier. The first-stage amplifier consists of a short length of erbium-doped fiber to produce low noise figures. The second-stage is constructed from a counter-propagating ring-laser, in which the signals and the lasing wavelength propag

## Abstract A new double‐pass long‐wavelength‐band erbium‐doped fiber amplifier with enhanced noise figure characteristics is demonstrated by adding a short length of forward pumped erbium‐doped fiber (EDF) in front of the double‐pass amplifier. By adding 7 m of EDF, the amplifier achieves a flat‐g
