โฆ Synopsis
We comment on the calculation by Voloshin and Zakharov of the rate of decay of a light Higgs Boson into pions. f" 1989 Academic Press. Inc. The Higgs Boson of the standard model may be very light, with a mass of 1 GeV or less, if there is a heavy weak doublet fermion (e.g., an 80-GeV quark or 105GeV lepton) [l-3]. If this is the case, the decay of the Higgs into mesons composed of light quarks becomes an important experimental signal. Recently Voloshin and Zakharov [4, 51 have pointed out that the couplings of a light Higgs to pions are calculable to leading order in chiral perturbation theory. The basic idea exploited by Voloshin and Zakharov relies on the quantum violation of scale invariance by the strong interactions.
In this paper, we review the Voloshin-Zakharov analysis in a slightly different language, which, we hope, will convince any doubters of the significance of their result.
