✦ Synopsis

In the title compound, [Cu(H 2 O) 6 ]L 2 Á2H 2 O, where HL = 3-carboxy-4-hydroxybenzenesulfonic acid (C 7 H 6 O 6 S), each Cu II cation lies on an inversion center and is octahedrally coordinated by six water molecules. The L À anions do not coordinate to copper, but act as counter-anions. The crystal structure is composed of alternating layers of [Cu(H 2 O) 6 ] 2+ cations and sulfonate anions. The [Cu(H 2 O) 6 ] 2+ cations, water molecules and L À anions are connected through a complex pattern of hydrogen-bonding interactions.

The Cu atom in the title compound, [Cu(C 7 H 5 O 6 S)-(C 10 H 8 N 2 )](C 7 H 5 O 6 S), is chelated by the two N-heterocycles and is covalently bonded to the sulfonate O atom of the sulfosalicylate ion in a trigonal±bipyramidal geometry. The uncoordinated sulfosalicylate anion interacts with adjacent
