β¦ Synopsis
Herpes zoster is a common disease of both healthy adults and those who are immunocompromised. The purpose of this review is to present the current understanding of its epidemiology, virology, pathogenesis and treatment. A case report is included to emphasize the sometimes atypical presentation and possible secondary bacterial complications. Involvement of the ophthalmic branch of the trigeminal nerve can cause a host of ocular complications. Proper understanding of the nature of the disease process is essential for the management of both systemic and ocular manifestations of herpes zoster.
