Es una de las obras de juventud del autor, en las que trae a colación y pone ante la vista del lector la angustia y la profunda labor creadora de un poeta joven. Lauscher queda vivamente impresionado por el suicidio de uno de sus amigos. Algo terrible y misterioso influye en la existencia de Lauscher, el cual presiente que ese algo pesa casi físicamente en su vida. Tan pronto se ve deprimido como alborozado ante el espectáculo de la Naturaleza. Es, en resumen, la historia de un joven, hecha angustia vital, que trata de descubrir el cómo y el porqué en si mismo y en su entorno, algo que no acierta a comprender.
