Herbert Sober's important scientific contributions, especially the development of modified celluloses (such as DEAE-cellulose)

and their application to the separation of macromolecules, have had a very substantial impact on progress in the broad fields of biochemistry and molecular biology. Herbert Sober was a warm, delightful, and generous man; most of all, he was that rarity, a thoroughly genuine human being. His remarkable scientific acumen and personality won him the friendship of many scientific colleagues as well as others.
