β¦ Synopsis
The use of ammonia and tertiary amines has provided yields of thioformamide in the range of 50-70%. N o thioformamide was detectable when strong base catalysts such as sodium methoxide were employed, presumably because of the more rapid polymerization of hydrogen cyanide under these conditions. The reaction of hydrogen cyanide and hydrogen sulfide can be conducted in either nonaqueous protic or aprotic solvents under 13-17 atm hydrogen sulfide pressure at room temperature or at 50 'C. The simplicity of the reaction allows the synthesis of thiazoles without isolation of thioformamide.
