## Abstract Since hepatitis C virus (HCV) and hepatitis delta virus (HDV) are transmitted by the same routes as hepatitis B virus (HBV), simultaneous or concurrent HCV and HDV infection in patients with chronic HBV infection may occur. To test this hypothesis and to examine the clinicohistological

β¦ Synopsis
The prevalence of delta virus infection was studied in 264 intravenous drug abusers (IVDAs) whose sera were found to be HBsAg positive between 1985 and 1987 and in 15 IVDAs from the period 1971-75, seven from 1976, 15 from 1979, and 37 from 1982. Delta markers were present in 41% of IVDAs with acute hepatitis B and in 65% of those who were chronic HBsAg carriers between 1985-87. The first evidence of delta virus infection was found in 1975. In 1976, 1979, and 1982, respectively, 42, 63, and 5% of IVDAs with acute hepatitis B had delta coinfection. In the West of Scotland, delta infection has been established in the IVDA population since 1975. The very high percentage of IVDA carriers superinfected with the delta virus implies that there will be an excess of patients presenting with severe liver disease in the future.

A total of 390 parenteral drug abusers (PDAs) at the Kaohsiung Municipal Narcotics Abstention Institute were examined for markers of hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis D virus (HDV), and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Approximately 15 to 20% of the general population in Taiwan are chronic hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) carriers. However, the incidence of hepatitis D virus (HDV) infection is low (5-8%) in patients with HBsAg-positive chronic liver diseases in this area. To evaluate the prevalence of hepatitis
## Abstract The aim of this study was to evaluate whether patients with chronic hepatitis delta virus (HDV) infection treated with alpha interferon and subsequent loss of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) eliminate HDV. HDV RNA was detected in 26 of 28 patients with chronic delta hepatitis using
## Abstract The clinical relevance of hepatitis B virus (HBV) genotypes has been documented; however, the prevalence of mixed HBV genotype infections in atβrisk groups remains controversial. The HBV genotypes were determined in 325 HBVβinfected intravenous drug users (IVDU) who were at a greater ri
## Abstract The epidemiology and impact of occult HBV infection in intravenous drug users remain largely unknown. The aim of the study was to investigate the prevalence of occult HBV infection among intravenous drug users in Taiwan. Molecular assays were used to determine the level of serum HBV DNA
