El llibre ens situa en el centre mateix de la vida sexual de l’autora, en els «dies tranquils de Clichy» quan interrompen en la seva vida la figura apassionada i turbulenta d’Henry Miller i la de la seva bella i excèntrica dona June: els dos pols d’una atracció eròtica que tracta d’explorar de manera principal els misteris del sexe, com a iniciació al coneixement i a la sensualitat.
